The essentials
Australian storage is not Australian inference
A practical guide to processing, residency and ownership—and why one badge cannot capture them all.

Start with the data journey
An API request passes through more than a model. Routing, inference, moderation, logging and support systems can have different location rules. Start by identifying which parts of that journey must stay in Australia.
Ask three separate questions
Where does the model process prompts? Where is customer content stored? Who owns and operates the service? A positive answer to one does not answer the others. Australian storage can coexist with overseas inference.
Read the scope, not just the region name
OpenAI’s API documentation lists Australia as supporting regional storage but not regional processing. Google also cautions that an endpoint’s location alone does not guarantee in-region ML processing. Read the applicable model, endpoint and feature conditions before classifying a configuration.
Use the directory as a starting point
Our service profiles identify the questions to resolve. A documented configuration needs a named model/version, deployment type, processing boundary and supporting sources. Unverified does not mean unsuitable; it means the evidence is incomplete.
